‘The Institute of Sexology’ told the complex and often contradictory story of the study of sex through its pioneers, including Magnus Hirschfeld, Sigmund Freud, Marie Stopes, Alfred Kinsey, William Masters and Virginia Johnson. It highlighted the profound effect that the gathering and analysis of information can have in changing attitudes and lifting taboos.
I designed the hardback book to accompany the exhibition, which featured more than 300 works of art, erotica, film, photography, and rare documents. The concept for the book followed on from the graphic design in the exhibition by John Morgan Studio. I created a ‘peep hole’ concept for the dust jacket and chose an ambiguous image for the book jacket itself. I wanted the book to be curious but also suitable for display in a variety of bookstores.
